August 31, 2010 – Achieve100, Inc. is proud to announce its HELPING OUR KIDS! Program which will donate 50% of its revenues each month to worthy causes benefitting children. During the month of September, 50% of all subscription revenues from its www.achieve100.com website will be donated to selected organizations that support children and their families who face the day-to-day challenges dealing with cancer.

For Connecticut, Achieve100 has selected REACH for the STARS Survivorship Program at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Part of the Division of Hematology and Oncology at Connecticut Children’s, REACH for the STARS, (REACH: Research, Education, Advocacy, Continued life and Health; STARS: Survivors Tackling All Roadblocks Successful), provides patients with comprehensive summaries of all treatments they received, individualized surveillance for late effects of treatment, access to wellness information, invitations to educational outreach events, college scholarships and additional resources on survivorship via a specialized web site

The REACH for the STARS Survivorship Program believes that individuals who have survived cancer and its therapy, have been strengthened by their experience and strive to make the most of their life. By designing individual evaluation and surveillance plans for these cancer survivors, and with the tools provided to them, these survivors can develop their own medical autonomy during their transitional years and allowing them to “REACH” for their own “STARS”.

Kelly is a cancer survivor whose battle began at the age of 7 years old. Writing about her story, she said “Being a ‘cancer kid’ only made me stronger in life and, as strange as it seems, I am thankful for what I went through. But most of all, I am thankful of those who helped me through it, whether it was my mom, dad, sister, doctors, nurses, friends, family, strangers just sending a prayer, those are the people that changed my life.”

National HELP OUR KIDS! Program Supports Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

For Colorado, Achieve100 has selected Brent’s Place, an organization that helps those living with cancer by providing housing and support programs. Brent’s Place has two living centers in Colorado – a 5 unit apartment which serves patients from Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center and Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers, and a new 16 unit apartment in Aurora near The Children’s Hospital and The University of Colorado Hospital.

The Brent Eley Foundation was established in 1997 by Linda and Donn Eley as a tribute to their son, Brent, who passed away ten years after fighting a fast-growing, highly malignant form of cancer. Brent’s only chance for survival then was a bone marrow transplant and the family had to face the challenges, hardships and separation resulting from long hospital stays far from home. Their experience led them to create the Foundation and open the original Brent’s Place in Denver to fill the need for living accommodations suitable for immune-compromised pediatric patients and their families following bone marrow transplants. In 2009, their second facility in Aurora opened, just blocks from the new Children’s Hospital, providing a “Safe-Clean” and supportive environment for pediatric cancer patients and their families.

In addition to 20 fully furnished and equipped apartments, two hospitality suites are available for visiting family members or past Brent’s Place families returning for periodic appointments. These suites are designed for short term stays of less than a week and are equipped with two twin beds and a private bath. Last year, Brent’s Place provided 87 family stays, serving 313 individuals. The average length of stay was 52 days.

In the Rocky Mountain Region, the Denver area is the only place where pediatric cancer patients can obtain bone marrow transplants. Brent’s Place is the only Children’s Hospital-approved housing facility in the Denver area for pediatric post bone marrow transplant patients with compromised immune systems.

August 27, 2010 – Achieve100, Inc. is proud to announce its HELPING OUR KIDS! Program which will donate 50% of its revenues each month to worthy causes benefitting children. During the month of September, 50% of all subscription revenues from its www.achieve100.com website will be donated to selected organizations that support children and their families who face the day-to-day challenges dealing with cancer.

For Iowa, Achieve100 has selected Children’s Cancer Connection, a non-profit organization based in Des Moines. Founded in 1988, Children’s Cancer Connection strives to enhance the quality of life for children and families affected by childhood cancer by providing programs for education, recreation and support. “We’re not about funding or research. Those things are important, but that is not our focus”, says Mark Slocum, Executive Director. “Our mission is: to enhance the quality of life for children and families affected by childhood cancer.”

With over 40,000 volunteer hours each year, Children’s Cancer Connection’s programs and services are offered at little or no cost to children diagnosed with cancer that are living in and/or treated in Iowa, and no one is ever turned away because of financial consideration. These programs and services include:
• Support Services including ClubHOPE, a family-based support group, Survivorship Connection, a program for young adult survivors of childhood cancer, an Adopt a Family program and various Family Events
• Hospital Based Programs including a Craft program for children while they are waiting for treatment, providing toys for the “Poke Box”, “End of Treatment Parties”, “Family Resource Kits”, and a Beads for Bravery program
• A Lending Library, an excellent resource for children with cancer, their siblings, parents and healthcare professionals including age-appropriate materials
• Camping Programs and Retreats including Camp Heart Connection – a week long residential camp for children with cancer, a week long camp for siblings, family weekend camps, and specialty retreats.

The logo for Camp Heart Connection came from Danny Cornish, a 5 year old boy who lost his battle with cancer. Before he died, he painted a picture of a bright rainbow surrounded by sunlight with a heart at its center. Danny told everyone it was “for all his family and friends who brought sunshine, rainbows, and love to him during his illness.”

August 25, 2010 – Achieve100, Inc. is proud to announce its HELPING OUR KIDS! Program which will donate 50% of its revenues each month to worthy causes benefitting children. During the month of September, 50% of all subscription revenues from its www.achieve100.com website will be donated to selected organizations that support children and their families who face the day-to-day challenges dealing with cancer.

For the New York City area, Achieve100 has selected Friends of Karen, a non-profit organization that serves children (and their families) from birth to 21 years of age who are diagnosed with cancer or any life-threatening illness, are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, and who live in the New York metropolitan area. Founded in 1978 by Sheila Petersen, Friends of Karen has served over 4,000 children and their families; when siblings are counted, they have touched the lives of over 10,000 children.

Friends of Karen strives to ease the burden of kids and families who live with the day-to-day challenges of cancer or other life-threatening illnesses. To help keep families strong during these difficult times, they provide the following Family Support Services:
• Direct financial assistance to help families cover basic living expenses such as rent, mortgage payments, and utilities as well as providing supermarket gift cards
• Emotional support of family members to help keep them stable, functioning, and able to cope
• Coverage of illness-related expenses, including medical co-pays and the cost of wheelchairs and other equipment, the cost of meals while at the hospital, and the cost of childcare for siblings when parents must be with their hospitalized children
• Advocacy on behalf of children and families before government and private agencies
• Assistance with funeral arrangements and expenses including bereavement support to surviving parents and siblings
• Year-round Gifts, bringing meaningful birthday presents, holiday gifts and school supplies to the children and their siblings
• Sibling Support Program, helping young siblings cope with their brother/sister’s illness.

“Our friends at Friends of Karen are often the voice of reason, the movers of mountains, and the lenders of hope,” said Mary Gravina, Asst. V.P. at Hospice Care Network. “They intuitively know what is most important to a sick child and have repeatedly gone above and beyond to assure that serious illness need not rob children of their childhood. They have taught us that even when coping with a life threatening illness, the simple joys of childhood and the intimacy of family life can still be experienced and enjoyed.”

For North Carolina, Achieve100 has selected BounceBack Kids, a non-profit Chapel Hill-based organization whose mission is to enrich the lives of children with serious medical conditions and their families through free year-round recreational, athletic, and social activities and support services. Founded in 2003 by three caring and committed men – Bill Jessup, Dr. Henry Friedman and Mike Zeillmann, BounceBack Kids provides programs to kids that range in age from 3 to 21. Their program is open to all children who meet its eligibility criteria both chronologically and developmentally and live in the Triangle or Triad or who are being treated at a hospital in those areas.

BounceBack Kids’ programs are offered in a caring and supportive environment that is safe and include:
• A Group Sports Program – group basketball skills instruction, group fitness training, and group golf
• An Individual Sports Program – individual basketball skills instruction and personal fitness training
• Year-Round Recreational and Social Activities – trips to local sporting events, excursions to museums and other cultural institutions, bowling, cooking, drama games, arts and crafts
• Support Services– a college planning guide, Parent Education Seminars, and BounceBack Kids FunBags for children leaving town for treatment or a clinical trial.

“If people are spending all their time at the hospital, they don ’t have time to do these things” executive director Lisa Brachman says. “We fill in the gaps.” Cina Livingston’s 10 year old son Shango has survived 7 surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation for a brain tumor discovered in 2008. As Cina told Carolina Parent magazine last year, “With him going through all the treatments and lack of energy, it was a chance for him to get out and bounce a ball. It’s also socialization. Between BounceBack and Duke, that’s become our family and friends.” All of BounceBack Kids programs and services are provided free of charge – and siblings are welcome to participate in the activities, giving the entire family a physical outlet.

For South Carolina, Achieve100 has selected Children’s Chance, a non-profit organization based in Columbia. Founded in 1996 by two mothers who had daughters battling cancer, Children’s Chance strives to fill in the gaps of current services provided for pediatric cancer patients and their families. Children’s Chance assists children with cancer and their families throughout the state of South Carolina, funding a variety of programs addressing financial, emotional, and psychological needs. Children’s Chance provides its services to families who have a child with cancer in South Carolina, regardless of where that child is being treated.

Children’s Chance works closely with several oncology clinics including Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) in Augusta, Carolinas Medical Center and Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, and The Greenville Children’s Hospital in Greenville. They are constantly communicating with the staff at these clinics and the families to ensure Children’s Chance funds are making a difference in the lives of these courageous kids.

These programs are provided at no cost to the families.
• Family Support Program used to assist families by paying non-medical bills such as mortgage/rent payments, electric bills, car insurance, car repairs, etc.
• Angel Funds used to help families with out-of pocket expenses such as gas,
food, and groceries.
• The Children’s Chance Counseling Program which provides counseling to families who have a child with cancer, paid for by Children’s Chance.
• Other Activities – including an annual School Supply Bash event where free school supplies are given to the child with cancer and their siblings, and the ever so popular “An Evening with the Gamecocks” event with the USC football team.
• Zig the Pig – the mascot and ambassador for Children’s Chance, and an advocate for children with cancer, visiting schools, businesses, and special events. Zig can be adopted by businesses, schools, individuals and community groups; and his popular book, Zig the Pig Goes to School, is used in schools across the state to help increase awareness and build empathy for children facing cancer.

Madelyn was 3 months old when she was diagnosed with cancer. After 8 rounds of chemotherapy, this now 4 year old shining star has no evidence of the disease. “Having a child with cancer is truly the hardest thing a parent can face in my opinion”, said Sheila, Madelyn’s mom. “It is thanks to wonderful organizations like Children’s Chance that give us a place to go for financial help, education and direction on how to cope with this.”

For Arkansas, Achieve100 has selected B.I.G. Love Cancer Care in Little Rock. B.I.G. Love Cancer Care is a non-profit, volunteer based organization committed to providing basic necessities and personalized support to cancer kids and their families during their most critical cancer battles. Established in 2007 by Jessica and Chaney Philips, B.I.G. Love Cancer Care honors their five year old daughter, Brooke Alyson Phillips, who had passed away the previous year after her two year battle with leukemia.

B.I.G. Love Cancer Care provides catered meals, parking passes, weekly groceries, parking passes, and other basic necessities for cancer families. B.I.G. Love Cancer Care works very closely with Arkansas Children’s Hospital and Texas Children’s Hospital near Houston. Last year, they purchased 25 foot travel trailer which is parked at a campground close to Texas Children’s Hospital so that families coming from long distances for cancer treatment have a place to stay at no charge. They hope to purchase one soon for families that need lodging close to Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

B.I.G. Love Cancer Care also helps the families of cancer victims in a very personal way, with visits of hope and support – even doing grocery shopping for families. “We want them to worry less about the details and be able to focus all their love and attention on their child. We never wanted to leave Brooke’s side…not to eat…not for anything. Likewise, BIG Love wants to help “carry” families through their difficult battles”, said Jessica Phillips, Brooke’s mom. “One of the things we learned most about Brooke is she loved us really big,” And Brooke’s personal love continues, not only with family support but with BIG Love’s Giant Toy Box program, which gives all young patients the chance to visit a giant toy box at the hospitals. It truly lights up the faces of these courageous children.

For Illinois, Achieve100 has selected Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation, a Chicago-based organization whose mission is to eliminate pediatric cancer and to provide hope and support to those who are touched by it.

Founded in 1992 by Kathleen Casey, Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation is named in memory of her eight year old son, Barrett “Bear” Krupa, who died after a courageous five and a half year battle with Wilms Tumor, a pediatric cancer. Amazingly, Bear expressed more concern for other pediatric cancer patients than he did for himself. He and his mom discussed and started foundation while he was still battling cancer. During his long stay in the hospital, Bear and Kathleen learned of the many hidden needs of both kids and their families. Simple things, like having games to play with went a long way to lightening the heavy burden the children face. Likewise, support for basic family needs such as transportation and parking on the many visits to the hospital remove undue stresses on an already overwhelming situation.

Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation’s Small Miracle Program specifically supports pediatric cancer patients, ages 0-19 and their families as they face the many day-to-day physical, psychological, and financial challenges that accompany the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric cancer. This program is only for residents of Illinois or children who are being treated at an Illinois facility. The program has two simple objectives: 1) Doing something special for the child; and 2) Providing support services for the family. “This year we will fund nearly 400 Small Miracles, meeting the needs of the majority of children who are diagnosed or treated here in Illinois”, said Kathleen. “The notes of thanks from the children, the tears from the moms . . . just helping these kids be kids. That is what Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation is all about.”

Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation also provides funding for Research Grants as well as Information and Support Service Grants to pediatric cancer facilities that are servicing the “immediate needs” of pediatric cancer patients and their families.
